Soon to be First Graders!

We are excited to be entering first grade soon! This week we have been conducting science experiments, focusing on the properties of mixtures. We mixed oil, water, and syrup and learned how liquids rise to the top of mixtures if they are lighter. We made lava in a cup and mixed our own puff paint with special ingredients. In reading we did an author study on Beatrix Potter. We loved her Peter Rabbit books with the beautiful illustrations. We made thoughtful predictions and wrote our own class book called the "Adventures of Peter Rabbit." In Writers Workshop we are putting the "frosting" and the "sprinkles" in our writing to make it ever better by developing the characters and setting. In math we are continuing to practice adding, subtracting, and solving problems. Our last three weeks will be spent creating memory books for kindergarten, and celebrating all the amazing things we have learned!

Conferencing with a classmate during Writers Workshop makes our writing even better!

Independently reading and completing a retelling graphic organizer during Literacy Centers. This writing response prompts us to write the beginning, middle, and end of the story.

Completing the inferring graphic organizer during Literacy Centers, by writing
"I see...I wonder...I infer."

In social studies we learned all about maps! In centers we went on the computer and completed the interactive map of the United States.

We planted flowers during science! We wrote a letter to our parents about what a flower needs to stay healthy.

Spring Is Here!

We have been celebrating spring in Writers Workshop! We wrote books about spring, the steps of growing plants, and the insects and animals we find during spring time. Some students were inspired to grow vegetable, fruit, and flower gardens at home! Now we are learning about zoo animals. Last week we went on interactive field trips to the San Diego Zoo to learn about the rhino, zebra, and cheetah. Next week we will learn and write about the panda, elephant, komodoo dragon, and giraffe. In science we have been enjoying learning about properties. We explore the shape, size, color, and texture of objects while using our five senses. Our favorite tool to explore properties is the surprise box! We were able to examine the cool science projects done by the older students in the school. We can't wait to be in first grade to start our own science projects. We wrote about our favorite ones in our science journals.

We are writing about our favorite science project in our science journals!

Reading in the Reading Nook!

Her favorite science project was the generator, especially because her big sister made it!

His favorite science project was the volcano. He wrote the steps of the volcano by writing time words first, next, then, last!

Enjoying sorting, graphing, and adding jelly beans during math!

Our spring egg hunt!

We made a birds nest with a coconut macaroon cookie and used jelly beans as baby bird eggs.
It was a yummy treat too!

Farm Animals and Super Science Experiments!

The students have been busy these past few weeks! During reading and Writers Workshop we learned all about farm animals. We watched short video clips showing what life on the farm is really like. We now know what animals give us, what sounds they make, what they eat, where they sleep, and all the farm chores. We took virtual trips to the farm following other kindergarten classes around the United States, and even took virtual trips to factories and learned how ice cream is made from milk and sugar. In science we finished our unit on measuring. We learned to measure using creative tools around the classroom and even learned how to measure liquids. In math we are enjoying traveling around the world on http://e-learningforkids.org/math_world.html. We are building skills while solving problems together. If you get a chance to visit River Bend, check out our books we wrote about the farm hanging up outside our classroom!

We learned how to measure liquids and solids during this science experiment. First we poured...

Next we mixed....

Then we squished....

Finally we have green homemade play-doh!

"Wow!!! It's squishy!"

Completing a beginning sound sort in Word Study. After sorting, students choose a card and move their game piece to the corresponding beginning sound.

During Math Centers, these games build skills such as counting sets, greater than/less than, and adding. Students draw a card and answer the question. If they are right, they roll the dice and move their game piece. These developmentally appropriate games can be found at the "Teach Me Store" The "Mailbox" books of math games are our favorite!

Students conference in the Reading Nook during Writers Workshop. After conferencing, students add new ideas to their story before placing their story in the "Finished" pocket of their Writers Workshop folder.

Adding the final touches to his farm animal book!

During recess, groups that earn painting through exemplary work and behavior get the choice to stay inside and paint with Miss Voss on Fridays! This week we made handprint animal art!

Hands folded on work, materials in the middle, and quietly waiting for directions. That's what clean up looks like and sounds like!

Did you know that many people's foot is the same size as their forearm? We had a hard time bending our arms and legs to test this theory, so we measured out our foot lengths on a piece of string and marked 8 footlengths. Then we measured how many foot lengths tall we are, and how many foot lengths long our forearm, fist, and head is.

We brainstormed creative ways to measure using classroom objects. Group 1 decided to measure a table using tissue boxes. How creative!

Group 3 decided to measure their friend using blocks. We decided that it wasn't easy to measure tall things with blocks, because they fall down. Next time we are going to use a tape measurer like

Happy St Patrick's Day! Students wrote stories of "How To Trap A Leprechaun." The green glasses and hat made us think like Leprechauns.

100 Days of School and Chinese New Year Celebrations!

In Readers Workshop we have been distinguishing the beginning, middle, and ending sounds of words while reading. We have learned the differences between realism and fantasy. In Writers Workshop we have been writing detailed stories. When we write a story, we include who, what, where, and time words first, next, then, last. Please encourage your child to write stories at home! In math we have been practicing writing numbers 1-30, problem solving, ordinal numbers, and patterns. During our 100 days celebration we learned to count by tens to 100! In science we have been comparing and measuring using vocabulary such as longer,  taller, shorter, smaller, bigger, thicker, and thinner. We measured and compared classroom items, how tall we are, how long are arms are, and graphed the results!
On the 100th day of school we wore necklaces made with 100 things and graphed our types of necklaces!

We followed the directions to create the number 100!
We wrote what we would buy with $100!

Designing our Chinese Dragon

We celebrated Chinese New Year by watching a short video clip of the celebration in China, found China on our globe, and read books about Chinese New Year. On the 100th day of school we made a Chinese Dragon out of 100 paper plates! “Happy New Year” in Chinese is “Gung Hay Fat Choy!”

We are retelling the story by using “Give Me Five”

1. Who are the characters?

2. What is the setting?

3. What was the problem?

4. What was the solution?

5. What happened first, next, then, last?

Math Centers!

We played measuring games in science to see which friend could make the longest “snake.” We rolled the dice, landed on a number, and added cubes to our “snakes.”
